Székely Traditions – Part 7. The inspiration for this college diploma project towards a degree from Apor Catholic College in Hungary – has been this student’s desire to explore her own Székely heritage. Part seven provides information on Székely customs surrounding birth and christenings. Wedding customs included many references to the beginning of married sex life and making babies. A pregnant woman in some places enjoyed special ranking and care, in other places she was expected to work like anyone else. Traditional methods of contraception are mentioned – while pointing out the general thought: a child is a gift from God. Midwives and birth at home, who could be present, how the umbilical cord was cut, what was done with the placenta, as well as when the doctor was called – are all described. In some places coal, garlic and broom twigs were placed under the newborn’s pillow to protect it. Christening customs are listed, such as who chose the god parents, when the christening and the feast following it could be held. Specific locations mentioned throughout this piece are Csíkszentdomokos, and Erdővidék. By Simó Ilona.
