Kodály: folk song, folk music collector. Speech given in Budapest on October 27th, 2017 at the Vass Lajos Association’s folk music gala program commemorating Kodály Zoltán. Born in Kecskemét, Hungary in 1882, Kodály died in Budapest in 1967. His classical compositions based on folk music are wellknown, as is the Kodály Method (approach to music education). It was Vikár Béla who introduced Kodály to the phonograph and it’s use for collecting folk song and music in the field. In 1905, on his first trip collecting folk music, he collected 150 melodies in 14 villages in the Csallóköz region of today’s Slovakia. By dr. Alföldy-Boruss István.
